Foster Care

 Who is a Foster Parent?

Your door opens. A child who has suffered abuse and neglect stands before you with eyes that tell of fear, anger, pain and sometimes emptiness. The child steps into your home needing more than you can imagine, but also needing what you can give.

You are a foster parent, and you wear many hats - parent, teacher, nurse, advisor, referee and confidante. You do not know how long the child will stay, but it doesn't matter. You will feed, clothe, shelter, teach, love and nurture this child who you do not know. But, before long, you will know the child and his or her dreams as if they were your own.

You believe that the child's birth parents are worth helping and supporting, while you support their child through a very painful time. As a foster parent, you make your heart a child's home. And the child leaves your home with eyes full of hope.

 Basic Qualifications

If you wish to foster a child, you may or may not have children of your own. You may own or rent your home. You may be from any cultural background, as the needs for foster families are diverse. No matter what your marital status, be it married, single, divorced or widowed, you are invited to learn more about fostering and adopting from Lena Pope Home.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Willing to open your home and your heart to a child.
  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Maintain financial self-sufficiency.
  • Attend training and preparation sessions.
  • Accept guidance and direction.
  • Parent as part of a team.
  • Consent to criminal, child abuse and driving record checks,
    and drug screening.
  • Participate in a home study.
  • Permit a fire and health inspection of your home.
  • Vaccinate all pets annually.
  • Obtain and maintain CPR/first aid certification.
  • Have adequate sleeping space.
  • Obtain a required number of training hours each year.
 The Children

The foster children who come into your home are simply that - children. Like all children, they have desires and needs. But for reasons outside their control, these children are struggling to have their desires and needs met. They are all ages, all races; some are siblings who need homes together, others are children with special developmental needs. They may have been born exposed to drugs, or they make have professionally diagnosed physical, mental or emotional conditions. They may have been abused or neglected in many ways. However, for all the adversity they have seen, they are truly special and have all the potential in the world to grow and succeed. But their success depends on your help.

With you and the team at Lena Pope Home looking out for them, these children can bounce back from any hardship and achieve their dreams. Each child is different, and his or her stories and needs are never the same. But they all have one thing in common:
They need you.
