Fairness
Hello Chapel Hill Parents/Guardians,
Ms. Maya (our social work intern) will be visiting each kindergarten through fourth grade classroom this semester to provide students guidance lessons each six weeks. This semester’s first guidance lesson covers “fairness”. Below are descriptions of activities for each grade level that accompanied this guidance lesson.

For Kindergarten – 2nd grade
Ms. Maya introduced herself and reviewed the character traits from the previous semester including being respectful, trustworthy, and responsible.
Ms. Maya used the game Candy Land to illustrate ways to play fair including sharing, treating everyone the same, playing by the rules, taking turns, telling the truth, taking responsibilities for mistakes, and treating others as we want to be treated. The students were asked “Is that fair?” when Ms. Maya would demonstrate unfair behaviors and the students would respond “That’s not fair!”. The students were rewarded for being able to share a way to demonstrate fairness.
Finally, Ms. Maya discussed through question and answer format what to do when someone is not being fair and what happens when we are not fair.
For 3rd – 4th grade
Ms. Maya introduced herself and reviewed the character traits from the previous semester including being respectful, trustworthy, and responsible.
Ms. Maya used the game Connect Four to illustrate ways to play fair including treating everyone the same, playing by the rules, taking turns, telling the truth, taking responsibilities for mistakes, thinking about how our actions affect others, taking advantage of people and treating others as we want to be treated.
Please talk with your students about what they learned and encourage them to practice showing fairness.
