Caring

Hello Chapel Hill Parents/Guardians,

Ms. Maya, Social Work Intern, has been visiting each kindergarten through fourth grade classroom to provide students guidance lessons each six weeks. This semester’s second guidance lesson covers “caring”. Below are descriptions of activities for each grade level that accompanied this guidance lesson.

For Kindergarten:
The student’s watched a short video with a song about being kind detailing many ways we can be kind.   They then took turns sharing ideas of how they can be kind and caring through the passing of a ball.  Each student had a chance to participate.  Student were encouraged to be kind all the time!

For 1st grade:
The book “One Smile” was read to the students which is about how one smile can change the world by causing a chain reaction of kindness.  We then discussed ways that we can be kind and caring.  The students actively participated by offering many great ideas.  They were encouraged to practice kindness in many different setting such as the classroom, playground, and home.

For 2nd grade:
The book “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” was read explaining the invisible bucket that we all have which holds our good thoughts and good feelings.  The book tells children how to fill buckets and what happens when we dip into someone’s bucket by being unkind.  The children were given an opportunity to share examples of how they could fill buckets of the people around them.  The positive feelings you get when you fill someone else’s bucket were highlighted.

For 3 and 4th grade:
The students learned about the different types of compliments such as complimenting someone’s personality (you are smart, funny, etc) or someone’s actions (I appreciate you opening the door for me).  The students were then given an opportunity to compliment each other by writing a compliment.  Each student gave and received at least three compliments from their peers.  We then discussed how it felt to give and get a compliment.  It was noted that compliments feel good to give and receive.  The students were encouraged to give compliments and be caring all the time!

Please talk with your students about what they learned and encourage them to practice showing caring and kindness to others.
