Taking Our Curriculum Overseas
Sue Hickman, a Kindergarten Teacher at CHA vacationed in East Asia while visiting her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. Mrs. Hickman thought it would be a good idea to pack some of favorite story books and even a few lessons and craft projects to share with her grandchildren and some of their friends.
What took place next, literally took government approval. Official flyers were posted in Mrs. Hickman’s son’s community that read, “American Teacher to Teach English this Week.” The signs boldly displayed the prominent government stamp approval.
Over 20 students and their families signed up for class. By the end of the week, Ms. Hickman had the elementary children reading some American childhood favorites along with completed arts/crafts projects based on the books. She selected Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister and taught the children the value of friendship and sharing. To teach colors and sequencing skills, she chose Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Eric Carle. Lastly, she taught the American alphabet using, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, by Bill Martin.
Chapel Hill is so fortunate to have Mrs. Hickman on staff. She is to be commended for her untiring work and her passion for educating children across the world and here at home.
