Luke
Luke is a 14-year old male who successfully completed the Disciplinary and Alternative Education Program (DAEP) at Lena Pope Home, Inc. Luke was assigned to DAEP for constant disruptive behavior in the classroom. He had been suspended from school multiple times for being non-compliant and disrespectful towards school staff. Luke showed behaviors such as anger, aggression, and hostility toward authority figures and classroom peers. Common outlets of anger included verbal lashing, biting, punching walls with his fist and fighting peers at school and siblings at home.
Luke's mother had to maintain her sobriety in order to get Luke from the custody of CPS. She is a recovering addict and has been clean since 2006.
Luke and his Behavioral Interventionist (BI) with Lena Pope Home established three goals: 1) resist negative peer pressure, 2) disagree appropriately, and 3) accept "No" for an answer. Other strategies were taken into consideration to decrease his anger outbursts. Equipped with a plan, Luke put it into action. As weeks went by, a significant change in his behavior and grades were noted. Luke is receiving passing grades in all academic subjects and continues to slightly make progress. Luke has returned to his home school and has earned two "out classes" (returning to a mainstream classroom) into the general education classrooms. He has now shown an interest in basketball and is considering participating as part of the school's basketball team. Luke is spending more quality time with his family and is now an active member of the Youth Program of a local church.
